Tools to help you take the GED test
Test Taker's Online Tools
There are three on screen "tools" that you can use during a GED® subject tests. These tools may improve the way you view the screen and the highlighting tool could be very helpful in saving you time when writing a short or extended response. The fourth item on this page describes a tutorial that you can review before testing. Color Combinations
You can change the on screen background and text color. This feature is helpful for some people who have difficultly viewing a white screen with black text. The On Screen Color Combinations document provides instructions on how to change the background color and the text color before you begin testing. Read this information and understand how to make these changes before entering the testing room.
Text Size
You may also change the size of the text/characters displayed on the screen. If viewing small print is difficult for you, read the On Screen Text Size document to learn how to quickly adjust the font size before testing. Read this information and understand how to make these changes before entering the testing room.
Highlighting Tool
During several of the GED® subject tests you will read articles, historical documents or stories. You will later use information from the material you read to complete statement or question using a short or extended response. Highlighting information while you read will save you time when you need to refer back to a document to support your opinion or argument. Section 1
The first section Screen Navigation. You will need to scroll horizontally and vertically during the test, select tabs to find additional information, and follow directions given in "Instructional Boxes." Parts of the tutorial are interactive and if you do not follow the on screen directions, you will receive an error message telling you what information or skill you must complete before you can move to the next part of the tutorial.
Section 2
The second section introduces you to Question Types and gives you the opportunity to practice answering the following type of questions:
Multiple Choice, Fill-in-the-blank, Drop-Down, Hot Spot, and Drag-and-Drop.
Section 3
The third section called Editing Tools explains how to use the online editor and takes you through exercises to insure that you understand how to quickly enter and/or re-arrange text. The following topics are covered: How to enter Short Answer and Extended Response questions, Revising and Editing text, How to Select, Move, and Copy words inside the editing window, and How to Undo or Redo changes (edits) that you make. Finally, you are given time to practice using all of the Editing Tools.

The fourth section of the tutorial introduces the Mathematical Resources available on the GED® subject tests. These resources will be available in the Mathematics exam and in the Science exam where needed. One of the most important features is the online calculator. The tutorial examples how to Open, Move, and Operate the Calculator. You will also need to move and/or size documents when using the calculator. Therefore, you will receive practice in operating the calculator and adjusting documents. In addition, there are reference materials on the test that you must access. These materials are the Calculator, Æ symbol, and Formula documents.
Section 5
The final section of this tutorial contains Test Tracking Tools, a series of tips on how to track your time and progress as you take a subject test. If you have problems reading a computer screen, the Color and Font Accommodation tools will make adjustments to the size of the font or color or background color of the screen. See the Color Combinations and Font Size documents listed at the top of this page to learn how to use these helpful tools.
The Highlighting tool will be an extremely helpful tool for all students. As you read test documents that you will later refer to in a short or extended response, you can highlight information that you may want to include in your answer.
Finally, the "Mark Questions for Review" tool can help you find questions at the end of the test. If you are unsure of one or more answers and want to return to the question(s) when you are finished with the test, you can find the questions you marked for review and analyze your answer. This feature only works if you have remaining time left to complete the test.
